Summer is here and that means it's field mowing season. Whether you run a commercial field mowing operation or simply like mowing a field or two on your own property, there are some great equipment options out there that will help you get the most out of your mowing experience.
Choosing the right mower for your land is an important decision. There are quite a few different options to choose from and you'll want to make sure you choose the right product for your application, for your tractor, for your budget and for the look you want to achieve. The most common two field mower styles in the northeast are rotary mowers and flail mowers.
Rotary mowers, also called brush hogs, have two thick blades that spin parallel with the ground and are known for their ability to mow through thick bushes and even small trees. Quality rotary mowers are typically more economical than flail mowers and are known for their durable design and their ability to cut through woody type material. Rotary mowers also require less horsepower to operate than flail mowers and they allow the operator to back in under low hanging branches if necessary. Although they cut through tougher terrain, rotary mowers will leave a rough finish to your fields. They also have a long tail swing making it easier to leave scalp marks and it can be challenging changing the knives on a rotary mower.
Flail Mowers are known for their ability to leave a cleaner cut than brush hogs due to their multi knife cutting drum that rotates perpendicular to the ground . Although they are typically more expensive than rotary mowers, if you're looking for beautifully finished fields, a flail mower is often the perfect fit. It's easy to replace knifes on flail mowers, which also have less of a tail swing, eliminating the scalping that might come with using a rotary mower. Additionally, if you're limited for space, flail mowers offer an easier storage solution. On the down side, flail mowers cannot be used for thicker, woody brush, they're strictly for small brush and grass. Flail mowers will also require a larger horsepower tractor.
